  What I Have Learned in the Management Certification Program
Thank goodness for the owner/management training program!  We are proof of it in salon numbers will increase if the manager and the owner put into practice everything that is taught in this class on a daily basis back at the salon. 

As an Owner, I have learned so much from this program.  It has taught me that our numbers do not happen by chance or by luck, they happen because we make them happen.  It has also taught me accountability to make sure that both my manager and I are both doing our parts to make sure that we hit our numbers.  I have always been a hands-on Owner, but this class has made me a more confident Owner as I now know what I can (and should) expect from both my Manager and my team.

Most importantly, it taught me the correct skill set needed to be a successful salon manager as well as the proper daily responsibilities of the manager. This was my second time through the program.  The first time, my manager quit being the manager after completing the program because she (and I) realized that while she is a phenomenal stylist, she does not possess the right skill set to be successful as a manager nor did she want the responsibility of being the one held accountable to “move the numbers.”  If it had not been for this class, this manager and I would have trudged along for years and I would have kept wondering why our numbers were not increasing.

During this session of owner/management training, it is important to note that I had a new manager begin the program with me in October, but she quit as the manager in December and our numbers clearly show that she was gung-ho and did what is needed to move the numbers in October, but then she didn’t do as much in November and stopped completely in December leading up to her quitting and the numbers reflect that decline in her performance as the Manager.  We had no manager until the end of March, when I hired our new manager who has hit the ground running and put everything that Lauren has taught us into practice.

Here is how our numbers have improved month over month in the key areas during the owner/management training program:

Monthly Sales - Over the nine months of this program, our numbers have increased each month with the exception of one month.  However, our biggest increases have been since the hiring of my new manager Stacy Johnson. Stacy started on March 26, 2011 and hit the ground running by putting into practice everything that was taught in owner/management training.  She re-instituted one-on-one’s, daily huddles, working with our stylists on how to improve their numbers.  In addition, Stacy and I stay in close daily communication and I have held her accountable to the numbers. 

PPH increased every single month.  Our prices have not increased in 5 years so this is truly due to our stylists now making the most of every guest.

PPG increased every month with the exception of Dec 09/Dec 10 and that is when my manager at the time stopped doing the proper things and quit as the manager that month.  It is the months since Stacy started that have had the highest PPG.

T/A increased every month (with the exception of 1) with the three biggest increases month over month being when our new manager (Stacy) began as she stressed all of the things that Lauren has

taught us such as every color gets a treatment, talking up the blow-dries, and the importance of education and recommendation of products.

Guest Count – Our guest count increased six of the months and decreased the other three months.  I included this number to show that we are now finally making the most of every guest in our chair because sometimes our sales numbers were higher even though guest count had decreased.

In conclusion, I highly recommend the owner/management training program.  It should be required of every single manager and owner in the system.  Lauren does an incredible job teaching this program as she relates well to the managers and inspires them while at the same time and most importantly, holding them accountable to their numbers.  This is the first time that a class has ever done that… she gets the managers to truly understand that it is their responsibility as the manager to “move the numbers.”  As you can see from my numbers, a manager who truly follows everything that is taught in owner/management training can do fantastic things with a mature salon!

  STACY HAD A HARD TIME HOLDING HER STAFF ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIER SALES GOALS.  SHE HAS MANAGED FOR TWO YEARS AND WAS MY
WEAKEST MANAGER.  STACY DOES NOT FIT THAT DESCRIPTION ANY MORE.  THE NUMBERS BOARD IS CURRENT AND THE STAFF IS AWARE OF DAILY
GOAL. STACY HELPS HER TEAM OVERCOME THIER WEAKNESS SHE IS COACHING.  SHE NO LONGER ACCEPTS THAT THE SALON IS SLOW DUE TO THE ECONOMY. YAH!

  I cannot express to you how valuable this class has been to both me and my management staff. This is my second time attending the class I can say it gets better each time. This class is the very best thing I have experienced in my time with the Fantastic Sams family. I have been with the Fantastic Sams system for 11 years and have run two top 50 salons and we continue to grow now operating six salons.
